DC Studios has just released the much-awaited preview trailer for Creature Commandos and introduced its fans to another dark, action-packed superhero series. The animated production offers fans an unusual cast of monstrous antiheroes, such as Amanda Waller voiced by Viola Davis, and Rick Flag, Jr. voiced by Frank Grillo.

One would expect a different creative style from James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios. So, of course, Waller bluntly declares,

"These a******s aren't human."

This is as if setting up a tone for a series that does not hold back from anything eccentric. As these monstrous individuals work under her, viewers can expect to be taken along on rough rides.

Well away from the usual superhero rosters, the Creature Commandos are a mix of mutant and monster characters designed to perform tasks that the regular heroes cannot. It has unique personas like The Bride, voiced by Indira Varma, who cryptically states.

“I was born here.”

Her mystical persona may be the crux of how one defines themselves and their purpose for Creature Commandos. The other highlight from the teaser is, of course, Doctor Phosphorus, who, given the menacing appearance and his introduction by Amanda Waller, is a pivotal figure in this destruction.

Returning from The Suicide Squad, The Weasel brings trademark oddball energy to the mix and is described by Waller as a survivor. All those characters are a refreshing break from traditional hero stories. G.I. Robot and Nina Mazursky round out the team; this monstrous lineup shows variety and creativity hard to find.

One of the final additions is Eric Frankenstein, who raises even greater moral issues when he says,

“You wanted me to be a hero…”

Voiced by Viola Davis, Amanda Waller is not done reminding the DC universe of her presence; this time, as the leader of the Creature Commandos. She even has a commanding presence in the trailer, as she leans heavily into the commitment to the mission.

“The United States is in the business of saving the damn world by any means necessary,” Waller asserts.

This set her no-nonsense approach to handling global threats. Meanwhile, Rick Flag, Jr., played by Frank Grillo, appears to struggle with the team's dynamics, underlining that,

“Until we find out the truth of what’s going on here, we’re supposed to be on the same damn team.”

The coupling of Waller and Flag will bring a sense of grounding with the familiar characters that come with the DC umbrella, promising a layered relationship as they run the unpredictable yet powerful team. Gunn's mix of action and horror with comedy and veteran characters should appeal to fans of less conventional superhero narratives.

Creature Commandos will be available on Max starting 5 December 2024. So witness the awkward and grotesque team take on a world that needs saving.
